Herzing University – Birmingham Offers New Paramedic Program - Applications Now Being Accepted for January 2012
BIRMINGHAM, AL, (August 9, 2011) – Expanding its array of educational opportunities in the healthcare and public safety fields, Herzing University – Birmingham is now offering the Diploma in Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic program to train individuals who would like to help patients in life-threatening emergencies. Individuals who already have an Emergency Medical Technician Certificate are welcome to enroll in the new program to upgrade their skills to the paramedic level.
“Our new paramedic program highlights our particular strengths in healthcare and public safety education, and serves as another example of Herzing University’s commitment to providing quality education to Birmingham-area students in areas of strong career opportunity,” said Don Lewis, campus president, Herzing University– Birmingham. “The paramedic career path has drawn greater attention from students due to the important role played by these vital emergency medical professionals after the tornadoes that caused so many injuries to Birmingham residents just a few months ago.”
The Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic program will train students to assess and manage patients withserious illnesses and injuries as they transport them to a medical facility. Incidents as varied as automobile accidents, heart attacks, slips and falls, childbirth, and gunshot wounds require immediate medical attention from paramedics, and this new program trains students to apply critical thinking skills, formulate and implement a treatment plan for trauma and medical patients of all ages.
A career as a paramedic is best for individuals who have an interest in patient care, work well under pressure, have good communication and people skills, deal well with emotional or difficult situations and can move quickly while being gentle and deliberate. Paramedics also need to be physically strong and healthy in order to perform well on the job.
The diploma in Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic program offers flexible class times to accommodate individuals who work rotating shifts and it requires an average of 16 months for completion.
