Herzing University-Orlando Announces Winners of Scholarship Contest, Awarding a Total of $5,000 to Deserving Community Residents
CASSELBERRY, FL (January 10, 2011) – Herzing University – Orlando announced today the winners of the Herzing University Community Commitment Scholarship, which were recently awarded to four residents of Orlando and the surrounding area.
Heather Antonacci, President of Herzing University – Orlando, said, “The Herzing University Community Commitment Scholarship is intended to help make our programs even more affordable for the most deserving students, and to demonstrate our commitment to the local community.”
The scholarships were awarded through a contest that was open to both non-students and current Herzing University – Orlando students. The winners were selected from individuals who completed the Scholarship Application Form, submitted an essay between 200 and 400 words on the topic, “How I can further contribute to my community with a Herzing University education,” and created Facebook videos explaining why they should be chosen to receive the Herzing University Community Commitment Scholarship. Based on the videos, the public voted online to select the finalists.
The scholarship winners are:
“Herzing University already awards many scholarships, especially to recognize scholastic achievement and financial need, but this one is unique,” Director of Admissions Lauren Ruston stated. “The Community Commitment Scholarship recognizes those individuals who wish to enhance not just their own future through education, but also the future of their community by offering their talent and newly-acquired expertise in fields such as nursing, physical therapy, surgical technology and radiologic technology.”

- Lauren Sperling of Farmington Hills, MI, who received a total of $2,000, which she will use toward her Associate of Science degree in Physical Therapist Assistant. Sperling received $1,500 for the best video on Facebook, as judged by the Campus Scholarship Committee. She also received $500 for being among the top four vote recipients for her video on Facebook.
- Jason Davis of St. Cloud, FL, who also received $2,000 in scholarships, which he is using toward his Associate of Science degree in Physical Therapist Assistant. Davis received $1,500 as the winner of the People’s Choice Scholarship for the most votes on his Facebook video and an additional $500 as one of the top four vote recipients.
- Michael Saylor, from Mount Dora, FL, and Kenneth Malone, from Rancho Cucamonga, CA, who each received $500 scholarships for being among the top vote recipients on Facebook. Malone is using his scholarship toward his Associate of Science in Nursing degree and Saylor is using his scholarship toward his Associate of Science degree in Physical Therapist Assistant. Saylor actually shared his scholarship with several non-winning finalists, in the spirit of the Community Commitment Scholarship program.
