Biomedical Engineering Technology Career Outlook
Biomedical Engineering Technology Career Paths
Medical equipment repairers’ training includes on-the-job training, manufacturer training classes, and associate degree programs. New biomedical equipment technicians begin by observing and assisting an experienced worker usually learning a single piece of equipment at a time. Gradually, they begin working independently, while still under close supervision. Biomedical equipment repairers are constantly learning new technologies and equipment through seminars, self-study, and certification exams.
Biomedical engineering technologists may also help engineers and scientists develop devices and procedures. Some specialties within this field include:
- Biomaterials technologist
- Biomechanics technologist
- Medical imaging technologist
- Rehabilitation engineering technologist
- Orthopedic engineering technologist
Work Environment
Most biomedical engineering technologists work in medical office buildings, laboratories, or industrial plants. Many work a standard 40-hour week. However, emergencies, deadlines or changes in design standards may require them to work longer hours. Some positions may require travel in order to service equipment at many different locations.
