Herzing University Offers College Credit for Prior Experience from Work, Military Training, Volunteering and Self-Study via Partnership with LearningCounts.org

Herzing University has always worked hard to consistently evaluate student transfer credit for courses taken at other higher education institutions, and now they're opening the door to even more students by partnering with LearningCounts.org to assist students in earning credit for prior life experience.  The partnership will enable potential students to demonstrate their college-level proficiency in various topics by developing a portfolio, taking a test or validating prior training that they have received through work and military experience, as well as volunteer work and self-study efforts.  Read full release.

Not Just Pie in the Sky!

Student Appreciation Day Dessert Toss

Raises Spirits and Money for Local Shelter

Mrs. Blackmore

It was a balmy, blue sky summer day when Akron Institute of Herzing University staff and students assembled in the campus parking lot to grill, share information, raise money for a local charity, and serve a little pie -- right into the faces of faculty members!

The fun took place from 11am to 3pm on Friday, June 17, 2011 and was all part of the Booster Club’s spring/summer annual fundraising event, which coincided nicely with the campus’s annual Student Appreciation Day.

Attendees invited for the cookout were asked to donate items for the Battered Women’s Shelter of Summit and Medina Counties. Each donated item earned a raffle ticket.

“There were several great raffle prizes,” said Maribeth Graham, Director of Admissions.

“We had four $25 Target gift cards, several great goodie baskets, and a grand prize of an iPod Shuffle that came with a $50 iTunes gift card!”

And there was more.

Organizers also brought prepared pies – actually aluminum plates filled with whipped cream, cleverly disguised as pies. Between noon and 3pm, the hottest time of the day, thirteen brave faculty and staff volunteers (ten women, three men), covered themselves in what looked like giant sheets of plastic wrap and took turns ‘getting creamed’ for a good cause.

“Student Appreciation Day is always one of my favorite events,” said Student Services Specialist, Michelle Kreidler. Kreidler served as a pie “target.”

“We were able to kick back and really enjoy our time together. It was very rewarding.”

Attendance estimates ranged from 50 to 60 participants for this year’s Student Appreciation Day/Fundraising celebration, and based on totals, a generous bunch they were.

Donations for the shelter included flip flops, cleaning supplies, toiletries, popsicles, juice boxes, fans, plastic storage bins, water and more.

“The event was a huge success,” Graham said.

“Our students and staff are amazing. We collected 334 items for the shelter, and raised $360 from the “Pie in the Face” event! Everyone had fun. It was great to see everyone come together for such a good cause. If you want to see more photos, check us out on Facebook!”

Akron Institute of Herzing University Offers Free College Preparation Course to Help Potential Students Gain Skills to Succeed

Program Offered Nationwide by Herzing University to Help Connect People with Careers, as Unemployment Remains High, but Skills Shortages Emerge for Employers

AKRON, OH (October 5, 2011) – Akron Institute of Herzing University announced today that it is offering a new, free College Preparation Course for individuals who have thought about continuing their education but aren’t quite sure they’re ready. The program is part of a nationwide initiative by Herzing University to lend a hand to individuals who need additional education and training to improve their career potential, but are reluctant to make the commitment due to fears about everything from study skills to work-life balance.

“We hear from so many potential students who really want to pursue additional education to help them move up to better jobs and careers, but they really need the support and confidence to proceed and make that investment in themselves,” said Renée Herzing, president of Herzing University. “We’re making this investment of free classes for students nationwide across all 12 locations as well as Herzing University Online, in an effort to help both individuals and employers to succeed, with skills and education that are aligned with today’s workforce.”

Although the unemployment rate in the Akron area remains high, employers are concerned about the inability to find skilled employees to fill jobs in many of the high-growth career areas where Akron Institute focuses its curriculum. The flexibility offered by Akron Institute to take courses on campus, online or a combination of both, is an important factor for working adults, particularly those with young families.

“This free college preparation course is designed to help everyone from high school students who want to see if small class sizes and one-on-one attention will help them be successful in college, to working parents who are concerned about whether they can succeed in juggling the demands of work, school and family,” said Dave LaRue, campus president of Akron Institute of Herzing University. “We’re giving them the opportunity to see what it’s like to learn on campus or online, and find a program that fits their interests and lifestyle.”

The free College Preparation Course is offered as an eight-week program on-campus for individuals who prefer classroom instruction. For those who prefer the flexibility of online classes, the College Preparation Course is also offered as a four-week online class.

Limited space is available for the next class, which begins on October 31. Potential students can find more information and register for one of the free courses at www.herzing.edu/freeclass or by calling 1-800-596-0724.
