Accounting Certification
Many employers require a bachelor’s degree in an accounting-related discipline, and some require a master’s degree. In addition to a formal education, those professionals looking for the best career opportunities in the accounting field should consider earning a certification.
There are many different types of accounting certifications available – each specializing in a particular area of accounting – from a number of professional organizations. The credentials below require in-depth knowledge in the specified accounting area and may require experience in the field and/or education for exam eligibility.
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) – Only professionals with this credential are able to file reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Every state uses the American Institute of Certified Public Accountant’s (AICPA) 4-part Uniform CPA Examination, but each state has different eligibility criteria so check with your state before beginning a degree program to make sure it will meet the educational requirements. Herzing students who have the intention of becoming a CPA should consider Dual Enrollment in the MBA program during their senior year in order to fulfill the educational requirement.
Institute of Management Accountants
Certified Management Accountant (CMA) – To be eligible, candidates must have two years of experience in managerial accounting and have a bachelor degree or minimum GRE score. The test consists of four parts and continuing education is required to maintain the credential.
Many other professional organizations offer certifications for specialized knowledge and/or experience in the accounting field; below is a sample. View the specific organization’s website for more information.
