Computer, Electronics, and Telecommunications Career Paths

Computer electronics engineering technologists help engineers design, develop, test, and manufacture electrical and electronic equipment such as communication equipment; radar, industrial, and medical monitoring or control devices; navigational equipment; and computers. Both technologists and technicians work in new product evaluation and testing. They also install, troubleshoot and repair equipment.

Getting started in the career

Technologists and technicians usually begin their careers by performing routine duties under the close supervision of an experienced engineer or scientist. As they gain experience, they are given more difficult assignments with only general supervision. Some engineering technicians and technologists eventually become supervisors, and some technologists hold positions as engineers.

Work Environment

Most engineering technicians and technologists work 40 hours a week in laboratories, offices, manufacturing or industrial plants, or on construction sites. Some may be exposed to hazards from equipment, chemicals, or toxic materials.
