Dental Assisting Career Outlook

Dentists are expected to hire more assistants to perform routine tasks so that they may devote their own time to more complex procedures. In addition, numerous job openings will arise out of the need to replace assistants who transfer to other occupations, retire, or leave for other reasons.

Dental Assisting Career Paths

In addition to working chairside with the dentist, there are a variety of career options available for a licensed dental assistant that include:

  • Practice Manager
  • Dental Laboratory Technician
  • Educator (may require additional education)
  • Dental Sales Representative
  • Training and Development Specialist

As a dental assistant, you will likely perform a variety of tasks including chairside assisting, patient education, taking radiographs, polishing teeth, taking impressions and much more. In addition, these professionals can also be involved in office-related tasks such as scheduling and confirming appointments, maintaining treatment records, handling patient payments and ordering supplies and other materials.

Dental Assisting Work Environment

Dental assisting offers a wide variety of career opportunities.  Upon graduation, the dental assistant will find that there are both full-time and part-time positions offering day and/or evening hours.

Dentistry offers a diverse range of clinical settings for employment.  There are large corporations that include many locations with multiple dentists at each site, and smaller private practices with only a few dentists. Dental assistants are also found in hospital settings, the military, and in school systems. There are opportunities to work chairside with the dentist, in an administrative position, or a lab setting.
