Interior designers are involved in planning the interior spaces of almost all commercial and residential buildings. They are concerned with enhancing a building’s aesthetic impact through color schemes, lighting, and furniture. Interior designers also work to augment a building’s function and safety on behalf of its occupants.
In the past, interior designers were primarily concerned with the decoration and artistic presentation of an interior space. However, more interior designers in today’s marketplace possess knowledge of architectural drafting, and often use computer-aided design (CAD) systems as part of their occupation. Interior designers work with architects, electricians, and building contractors to plan layouts and meet the needs of their clients.
Interior design is a growing field, although competition for jobs is expected to be strong, since many talented and creative individuals are attracted to this occupation. A college degree in Interior Design will be essential to anyone who wants to enter this field.
Our Program
Herzing University’s Associate of Applied Science in Interior Design provides entry-level skills for individuals entering the interior design field at the associate’s degree level. The student will develop knowledge of interior furnishing, materials, basic construction, lighting and color schemes. Skills in the use of CAD and 3-D modeling techniques will be covered. Students will then learn to apply this design and technical knowledge in the development of customized interior solutions in residential and commercial applications. Some of the topics covered in this degree program include:
AutoCAD for Interior Design – students learn computer drafting techniques for interior design work.
3-D Modeling for Interior Design – students learn how to use 3-D modeling software (Revit) for interior design applications.
Commercial Design – students learn concepts of interior design as they relate to commercial structures, including public spaces and office buildings, and how general building codes impact interior design.
Residential Design - students learn concepts of interior design as they relate to residential structures, with emphasis on the spatial envelope, materials, lighting and finishes.
After Graduation
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of interior designers is expected to grow faster than average for all occupations over the next decade. Economic expansion, growing homeowner wealth, and an increasing interest in interior design will increase demand for designers. Herzing University’s Career Services Department provides all graduates with individual assistance during the job search process. The Minneapolis campus of Herzing University had a 96% placement rate of available graduates in 2006.
