Health Information Management (AASHIMOH)Health Information Management (HIM) professionals are experts in handling patient data. They are in charge of making sure electronic and paper files are stored securely according to federal, state, and institutional laws and guidelines. HIM technicians analyze patient data and perform research to help the health care provider maintain quality and efficiency. In addition, they check the patient files to make sure the medical insurance coding was done correctly.
HIM professionals must be comfortable working on computers. They must also be detail-oriented, analytical, and have strong communication and decision-making skills.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of Medical Records and Health Information Technicians will continue to grow at a rate of 18% through 2016, a rate that is much faster than the average for all occupations.
