MADISON, WI (June 4, 2013) – Herzing University – Madison announced today that Jeff Westra, director of career development, has been honored with the 2012 Volunteer of the Year award from the Workforce Readiness Committee of the Greater Madison Area Society For Human Resource Management (SHRM).

 “Jeff has always worked hard to contribute to the community and create an environment where others can thrive,” said Chris Montagnino, Herzing University – Madison campus president. “We are proud to have Jeff take charge of extra initiatives outside his job scope at Herzing and be a major contributor to the Greater Madison community. He is dedicated to our students’ success, as well as the success of others.”

At SHRM, Westra has been integral to its Workforce Readiness Committee in Serving as Chairman of the Workforce Readiness Committee and working with committee members to host the First Job Boot Camp for the community, sharing best practices, and conducting seminars on interviewing and resume writing. The committee seeks to benefit the community by providing workshops like these for non-profits and education partners such as the Urban League, YWCA, Omega School, the Common Wealth Development, the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, and the Workforce Development Board of South Central Wisconsin. Westra has served as the committee chair for the past two years. He was nominated for the award by Workforce Readiness & Diversity Director, Michele Thoren, and received his award at a presentation during the committee’s annual conference on May 14, 2013.

A Herzing University – a Madison campus alumnus himself, Westra has been the Director of Career Development with his alma mater since 2006, leading a team that is responsible for creating connections with employers to help students find jobs in their career fields upon graduation. He also creates courses on resume writing and interviewing skills development, and works one-on-one with students to provide personalized career search coaching.

Kenosha - Retention Rates

Each year Herzing University provides all current and prospective students with our retention rates for a specific cohort of first-time, full-time students in Bachelor’s programs. This information is gathered annually in compliance with the Student Right-to-Know Act. Retention rates are calculated for full-time, first-time Bachelor’s students starting in the fall semester that are still enrolled in that program the following fall semester. Some students not retained may have transferred to another institution.

Jeff WestraAt Herzing University, the Career Development Department assists students with employment from day one. We are happy to provide our students and graduates with the tools necessary for a successful employment search. This includes assistance with resumes and other career documents, interviewing skills, and identifying employment opportunities. We also conduct several career expos each year in order to bring our employers on campus to meet with our students and alumni, and to discuss employment opportunities. The Career Development Department posts job opportunities each week which our students and alumni can pursue. Our mission is to provide the tools and training necessary to allow our students and graduates to succeed in the workplace. Education works… and so do our graduates!

Meet Our International Staff


Thomas Haynes – Director of International Operations

Thomas Haynes has been involved in international education and higher education management for over 23 years. After ten years as a faculty member and Director of the Modern Language Center at Butler University (Indianapolis, IN), he has served as a higher education Dean and Site Director, and in international student leadership roles. He directs Herzing University’s international efforts, and he works closely with students and affiliate higher education institutions worldwide.

Matthew Schneider – Manager of International Operations

Matthew Schneider has twelve years’ higher education experience, ten in the Herzing University system. Matthew has served as an Admissions Advisor, Director of Admissions, and Campus Director. Matthew manages Herzing University’s Asia initiatives and works directly with students and affiliate higher education institutions to develop articulation programs, joint programs, and faculty exchanges. He enjoys rugby, hiking, and camping.

Dr. Xin Liu – Professor

Dr. Xin Tao Liu has been dedicated to USA-China culture exchanges activities in the last ten years, frequently visiting China universities to establish relationships between the two countries. He has served as full-time faculty at our Atlanta campus, contributing to his deep understanding of international students’ needs and goals. He is a native of Shangdong province in China, and he has lived in the United States for the past 32 years.

Bryan Lutzke – International Student Advisor

Bryan Lutzke has served in many roles during his five years at Herzing University. His current role is to assist international students with our admissions process and successfully start their academic programs. He also works closely with affiliate higher education institutions to insure smooth transitions for students. Bryan has traveled extensively to Bolivia, Peru, Australia, Canada, Mexico, India, and Nepal, which has provided him with experience and a much larger appreciation of today’s global society. When not at Herzing University, you can find him on the golf course or running the many trails the city has to offer.

Chen Mi – International Student Ambassador

Chen Mi was an undergraduate student…. She came to American in September 2012 to study business management at Herzing University and graduated in April 2014. Chen is currently enrolled in our MBABM program and is a part-time International Student Ambassador at our Atlanta campus, working..."
