MILWAUKEE, WI (February 24, 2014) – Have you ever driven past a field of windmills and wondered who maintains them and keeps them running? It could be you, with an associate degree or diploma in Wind Energy Technology, now available from Herzing University – Online.

“Wind energy is one of the most promising green energy sources and it is growing rapidly across the country,” said Nigel Longworth, campus president of Herzing University – Online. “Our new Wind Energy Technology program is well suited to people who enjoy solving logical systems challenges, and it will enable them to join a growing industry with a lot of career potential across many technical systems jobs.”

The United States has enough wind power capacity to power 15 million homes, and wind energy was the number one source of new energy generating capacity for the country for the year, according to a 2012 report from the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA). There are more than 45,000 operating utility-scale wind turbines operating in the U.S. across 39 states and Puerto Rico, providing jobs for more than 80,000 people and growing.

The Herzing University Wind Energy Technology program covers industrial safety, applied and wind energy physics, energy production from wind and wind energy maintenance. It also covers DC and AC electricity, motors and generators, fluid power, programmable logic controllers and basic mechanics. In addition, students will earn certification in OSHA 10, basic safety and CPR, and a Suzlon Climbing Certificate.

Charles Clayton, Training Manager at Suzlon Wind Energy’s North American training facility agreed that interest in wind energy is on the rise. “Wind energy is just cresting on its potential,” he said. Herzing University is partnering with Suzlon, the 5th largest turbine manufacturer in world, to provide students with a hands-on training component. At the end of the Herzing University wind energy technology program, students will spend two weeks at Suzlon’s 12,000-square-foot training facility—the only facility in the Americas to offer a fully operational, working-height wind turbine dedicated exclusively for training.

The Herzing University diploma program in Wind Energy Technology can be completed in a year and the associate of science degree can be completed in 20 months. To learn more or register for classes, students are encouraged to contact admissions at 1-800-596-0724, or visit www.herzing.edu

Madison, Wisconsin -- His background is in police work and he teaches law enforcement, security and risk assessment at Herzing University – Madison. He is also the senior security manager at Covance Laboratories. Michael Ramstack, 39, has been named to this year’s “20 Under 40 List,” by Security Director News, an international news source for security professionals. Once per year, the publication recognizes “Up-and-coming” industry members.

“I don't view myself as being anything special, just someone who loves what he does and is committed to doing the best job he can,” Ramstack said. “I believe in hard work, dedication, and above all, an open and honest approach to my job. I am very honored and proud to have been recognized, it keeps me motivated and excited for my future.”

Ramstack’s enthusiasm about the security business can be traced back to his younger days.

“Security was always something I was interested in, going all the way back to my first job as a night security officer at a local resort while in college,” he said.

His next position as a loss prevention supervisor for a large retail chain added another dimension. A 13-year career as a police officer followed, but Ramstack did security surveillance consulting on the side.

“I began my law enforcement career, but never lost that interest,” he said.

Today Ramstack oversees security at one of Dane County’s largest employers. He loves being able to blend all of his previous experience into a fulfilling career.

“To move from the public sector into the private sector provided the opportunity to expand my experience to a corporate environment,” he said. “It provided exposure to a variety of experiences ranging from the security side as well as the business management side. I think the security professional gets a good mix of both and needs to learn how to balance both while accomplishing a good security program.”

Opportunities in the security field are plentiful, according to Ramstack, and he shares his devotion with his Herzing University students.

“I think it is critical to be able to base your conversations on real life experiences and examples versus just using information from a text book,” he said. “I attempt to bring in not only my own personnel experiences, but those things going on currently in the world and relate those to the topics we are currently discussing in class.”
