Health Information Management Program Receives Initial Accreditation

MILWAUKEE (March 5, 2013) – Herzing University Online announced today that it has earned programmatic accreditation for its Associate of Science in Health Information Management degree program from the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).

Students, alumni, faculty and staff at Herzing University’s Minneapolis campus created something special with their second installment of Herzing from the Heart. Recognizing a need in the community for children to have greater access to dental care, Herzing – Minneapolis pooled its resources and created an event offering free dental cleanings, sealants, fluoride treatments, and x-rays to kids aged 4-17. On the morning of Saturday, October 12th, the 18-chair dental clinic was in full swing with Herzing students, alumni, and faculty working efficiently to provide each patient the services they needed. In total, the value of the cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, and x-rays provided by Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting students during the event would be roughly $11,934.

Getting their teeth cleaned is probably not the first thing most kids think of doing on a Saturday morning, but there were plenty of activities at this year’s Herzing from the Heart that made the experience more enjoyable. The scavenger hunt was a hit, as 31 participants completed activities that led them into the Occupational Therapy Assisting (OTA) lab and the Nursing Lab. Every participant who completed the scavenger hunt was entered into a drawing for an iPad Mini, which was won by a very happy eight-year-old.

The Nursing Scrubs Sessions proved to be another great addition to this year’s event, as 18 high school students were given a free set of scrubs and the chance to learn about nursing from Herzing students and faculty. Scrubs Session participants completed a series of nursing activities including learning to check vital signs, how dress a wound, and how to diagnose a health scenario.  By using the same simulation equipment as Herzing Nursing students, the 18 motivated high school students were able to gain a unique glimpse into the world of nursing.

Although there were new additions to this year’s Herzing from the Heart, the main focus of the event remained the same. Providing for the local community was at the heart of the event and that focus was very apparent by the number of students, alumni, faculty, and staff who donated at the Memorial Blood Centers blood drive, which took place during the event. Thanks to the efforts of donors and Memorial Blood Centers, an estimated 79 could be saved!

Planning has already begun for next year’s Herzing from the Heart event. There’s a culture of very motivated students with big hearts at Herzing – Minneapolis, where students have already acknowledged the need to make more people aware of the free dental services that will be offered at the third annual Herzing from the Heart. Program Offered Nationwide by Herzing University to Help Connect People with Careers, as Unemployment Remains High, but Skills Shortages Emerge for Employers

ORLANDO (October 5, 2011) – Herzing University – Orlando announced today that it is offering a new, free College Preparation Course for individuals who have thought about continuing their education but aren’t quite sure they’re ready. The program is part of a nationwide initiative by Herzing University to lend a hand to individuals who need additional education and training to improve their career potential, but are reluctant to make the commitment due to fears about everything from study skills to work-life balance.

“We hear from so many potential students who really want to pursue additional education to help them move up to better jobs and careers, but they really need the support and confidence to proceed and make that investment in themselves,” said Renée Herzing, president of Herzing University. “We’re making this investment of free classes for students nationwide across all 12 locations as well as Herzing University Online, in an effort to help both individuals and employers to succeed, with skills and education that are aligned with today’s workforce.”

Although the unemployment rate in the Orlando area remains high, employers are concerned about the inability to find skilled employees to fill jobs in many of the high-growth career areas where Herzing University – Orlando focuses its curriculum. The flexibility offered by Herzing University – Orlando to take courses on campus, online or a combination of both, is an important factor for working adults, particularly those with young families.

“This free college preparation course is designed to help everyone from high school students who want to see if small class sizes and one-on-one attention will help them be successful in college, to working parents who are concerned about whether they can succeed in juggling the demands of work, school and family,” said Heatherann Antonacci, campus president of Herzing University – Orlando. “We’re giving them the opportunity to see what it’s like to learn on campus or online, and find a program that fits their interests and lifestyle.”

The free College Preparation Course is offered as an eight-week program on-campus for individuals who prefer classroom instruction. For those who prefer the flexibility of online classes, the College Preparation Course is also offered as a four-week online class.

Limited space is available for the next class, which begins on October 31. Potential students can find more information by calling 1-800-596-0724.

MTMI is the first to provide medical imaging professionals with access
to continuing education via live, interactive webinar simulcast technology

WAUKESHA, WI (May 16, 2013) – Medical Technology Management Institute (MTMI) will offer nearly all of its 2013 continuing education (CE) seminars for medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals in live webinar simulcast format, the first education institute in its field to offer this convenient, cost-effective option.

“We recognize that the healthcare delivery system is undergoing tremendous changes with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, as well as the impact of sequestration, both of which have created pressure on training budgets,” said Ed Barnes, president of MTMI. “These budget pressures have made it more difficult for healthcare organizations to pay for all of the training that their professionals require, plus their travel to seminar locations, so we developed webinars and the new interactive webinar simulcast format to help them bridge that financial gap while still experiencing a high quality educational experience.”

The simulcast is a simultaneous streaming of the live program over the internet that enables students to be part of the live cyber-audience with the same opportunity to ask questions or hear others’ questions of the instructor, providing the same educational experience as the classroom students receive.  MTMI also offers many programs via live webinar.

Barnes added, “Students have told us they like the convenience of participating from anywhere there is an internet connection, which allows them to more easily fit continuing education into their busy lives.”

Education that requires hands-on training with medical imaging equipment will continue to be delivered as live classroom and laboratory experiences.  MTMI will also continue to offer an array of courses and seminars in the classroom throughout the U.S. and Canada for individuals who prefer to learn in a face-to-face setting.

Simulcast, webinar and live seminar schedules are available on the MTMI website at www.mtmi.net.

TOLEDO, OH (Aug. 30, 2013) Two local schools have joined forces to help make finishing a GED more accessible. Herzing University – Toledo will begin offering weekend GED classes in partnership with the Penta Career Center Adult Education Dept.

GED classes will begin the weekend of September 14 –15 at the Herzing University – Toledo campus, 5212 Hill Ave. (Hill and Reynolds intersection). Saturday classes will run 9 a.m. to noon, while the Sunday classes will operate 1 to 4 p.m.

The partnership is a first-of-its-kind for the region, because no GED classes currently are offered on Sundays. The challenges of a work-school-family balance and other potential obstacles are discouraging many students from pursuing a GED, which affords them the opportunity for furthering their education. This initiative looks to remove some of those barriers, making students’ dreams to better their lives through education a reality.

“Education is the whole reason why we exist, so assisting with GED courses for teens and adults is a worthwhile mission—especially if it makes completing high school more attainable and accessible for a hard-to-reach community of people who may be working,” said Greg Guzman, president of Herzing University’s Toledo campus. “A weekend program of GED courses supplements the great work Penta does in the community at local libraries, The Source, and other locations.”

Debbie Morris, ABLE Coordinator at Penta, agrees the new program will help many adults, and the possibilities do not end there. "Penta's Adult Education Department is looking forward to this unique opportunity to partner with Herzing University. In addition to offering our GED/ABLE classes on site at Herzing, Penta Adult Education is also pursuing additional educational opportunities for our students with Herzing," said Morris.

Penta’s Adult Basic Education program is a student-centered learning opportunity for adults who desire to improve their learning and earning opportunities. The classes provide adult learners an opportunity to improve reading, writing and math skills in preparation to take the Official GED Test. Classes are held two days per week for three hours each day. Registration is required and orientation is mandatory.

Those interested in learning about obtaining a GED should contact Herzing University – Toledo at 419.776.0300 or the Penta Career Center Adult Education program at 419.661.6555.
