Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene

An increasing demand for dental care has led to major career opportunities for dental hygienists.

The need for dental services will continue to grow due to the aging of the population and the renewed focus on preventative care. To keep costs down, dental offices and other care facilities will increasingly employ dental hygienists to perform services that were traditionally handled by dentists.

Dental hygienists perform a wide range of duties including:

  • Assessing patients’ teeth and gums
  • Recording the presence of diseases or abnormalities
  • Removing soft and hard deposits from teeth
  • Teaching patients how to practice good oral hygiene
  • Taking x-rays and developing film
  • Applying cavity-preventative agents such as fluorides and pit and fissure sealants

Hygienists may prepare clinical and laboratory diagnostic tests for the dentist to review and interpret. Hygienists sometimes work with the dentist during treatments.

If you’re up for a challenge, this is a wonderful career.

Successful Dental Hygienists are truly dedicated to helping their patients. They play a critical role in ensuring that individual patients practice the correct preventive care on a regular basis.

A career as a dental hygienist could be right for you, if you:

  • Like to work with people
  • Are compassionate and supportive
  • Are detail oriented
  • Have an interest in teeth and dental procedures
  • Like clear guidelines
  • Trust facts
  • Have good people and communication skills
  • Feel oral health is very important

A top growth career in the booming field of healthcare.

Dental assistants now play a key role in dental offices across the country. As the demand for dental services continues to grow, these professionals are being called on to handle a broader range of responsibilities. Working alongside a dentist, their patient care work includes:

  • Handling instruments and operating dental equipment
  • Sterilizing instruments and equipment
  • Taking dental x-rays and processing the film
  • Removing sutures
  • Applying topical anesthetics to gums or cavity-preventive agents to teeth
  • Placing rubber dams on the teeth to isolate them for individual treatment

In addition, these professionals can also be involved in office-related tasks such as scheduling and confirming appointments, maintaining treatment records, handling patient payments and ordering supplies and other materials.

A great opportunity in patient care and support.

Professional dental assistants demonstrate exceptional time management skills, multitasking abilities, are detailed oriented, and contribute to a positive team environment while focusing on patient care as a top priority.

A career as a dental assistant would be right for you if you:

  • Are very precise and detail oriented
  • Enjoy helping others
  • Have strong visual/spatial abilities
  • Have good communication and people skills
  • Work well as part of a team
  • Are interested in teeth and promoting oral health
