TOLEDO, OH (June 21, 2013) – High school juniors can earn free college credit and get an early taste of campus life this summer at Herzing University in Toledo, which is offering a free technology course starting Monday, July 8.

The Herzing University Transitions program is designed to help high school seniors-to-be earn college credits while attending high school. Interested students may attend Herzing University – Toledo to take one course, tuition-free.

The Information Systems 121 course will run Tuesday through Thursday mornings, from July 9 through August 23, covering Internet-related topics and computer networking. Students will build their own website while learning communications protocols and programming languages, such as HTML, C++, and others. A video game development course is planned for the fall semester.

“At Herzing University, we are committed to helping develop our local community’s educational base in the career-focused sector,” said Greg Guzman, Toledo campus president. “The intent of the free summer course is to help get talented students interested in an in-demand career track and meet our local workforce’s growing need for college graduates in the field of information technology. Free college credit earned now also can reduce the cost of higher education later.”

Interested students and/or their parents can call 419-776-0300 or stop by the Herzing University – Toledo campus, 5212 Hill Ave., to obtain more information or to register for the course. The registration deadline is Monday, July 1.

TOLEDO, OH (Aug. 30, 2013) Two local schools have joined forces to help make finishing a GED more accessible. Herzing University – Toledo will begin offering weekend GED classes in partnership with the Penta Career Center Adult Education Dept.

GED classes will begin the weekend of September 14 –15 at the Herzing University – Toledo campus, 5212 Hill Ave. (Hill and Reynolds intersection). Saturday classes will run 9 a.m. to noon, while the Sunday classes will operate 1 to 4 p.m.

The partnership is a first-of-its-kind for the region, because no GED classes currently are offered on Sundays. The challenges of a work-school-family balance and other potential obstacles are discouraging many students from pursuing a GED, which affords them the opportunity for furthering their education. This initiative looks to remove some of those barriers, making students’ dreams to better their lives through education a reality.

“Education is the whole reason why we exist, so assisting with GED courses for teens and adults is a worthwhile mission—especially if it makes completing high school more attainable and accessible for a hard-to-reach community of people who may be working,” said Greg Guzman, president of Herzing University’s Toledo campus. “A weekend program of GED courses supplements the great work Penta does in the community at local libraries, The Source, and other locations.”

Debbie Morris, ABLE Coordinator at Penta, agrees the new program will help many adults, and the possibilities do not end there. "Penta's Adult Education Department is looking forward to this unique opportunity to partner with Herzing University. In addition to offering our GED/ABLE classes on site at Herzing, Penta Adult Education is also pursuing additional educational opportunities for our students with Herzing," said Morris.

Penta’s Adult Basic Education program is a student-centered learning opportunity for adults who desire to improve their learning and earning opportunities. The classes provide adult learners an opportunity to improve reading, writing and math skills in preparation to take the Official GED Test. Classes are held two days per week for three hours each day. Registration is required and orientation is mandatory.

Those interested in learning about obtaining a GED should contact Herzing University – Toledo at 419.776.0300 or the Penta Career Center Adult Education program at 419.661.6555.

Program Offered Nationwide by Herzing University to Help Connect People with Careers, as Unemployment Remains High, but Skills Shortages Emerge for Employers

TOLEDO (October 5, 2011) – Herzing University – Toledo announced today that it is offering a new, free College Preparation Course for individuals who have thought about continuing their education but aren’t quite sure they’re ready. The program is part of a nationwide initiative by Herzing University to lend a hand to individuals who need additional education and training to improve their career potential, but are reluctant to make the commitment due to fears about everything from study skills to work-life balance.

“We hear from so many potential students who really want to pursue additional education to help them move up to better jobs and careers, but they really need the support and confidence to proceed and make that investment in themselves,” said Renée Herzing, president of Herzing University. “We’re making this investment of free classes for students nationwide across all 12 locations as well as Herzing University Online, in an effort to help both individuals and employers to succeed, with skills and education that are aligned with today’s workforce.”

Although the unemployment rate in the Toledo area remains high, employers are concerned about the inability to find skilled employees to fill jobs in many of the high-growth career areas where Herzing University – Toledo focuses its curriculum. The flexibility offered by Herzing University – Toledo to take courses on campus, online or a combination of both, is an important factor for working adults, particularly those with young families.

“This free college preparation course is designed to help everyone from high school students who want to see if small class sizes and one-on-one attention will help them be successful in college, to working parents who are concerned about whether they can succeed in juggling the demands of work, school and family,” said Greg Guzmán, campus president of Herzing University – Toledo. “We’re giving them the opportunity to see what it’s like to learn on campus or online, and find a program that fits their interests and lifestyle.”

The free College Preparation Course is offered as an eight-week program on-campus for individuals who prefer classroom instruction. For those who prefer the flexibility of online classes, the College Preparation Course is also offered as a four-week online class.

Limited space is available for the next class, which begins on October 31. Potential students can find more information and register for one of the free courses at www.herzing.edu/freeclass or by calling 1-800-596-0724.
