Massage therapists apply their training to the areas of overall health promotion, stress reduction, pain management and injury recovery. Massage is a healing art as well as a science. It requires academic and technical knowledge, clinical skills, manual dexterity, and sensitivity. Earning a degree in massage therapy from Herzing University helps prepare you for all these duties and requirements. You must have the desire to help others, as well as a commitment to investing the time and energy to develop the required skills, to become a massage therapist.

How do I advance in this career?

In most states, once you’ve completed your degree in massage therapy, you must pass a state board exam and apply for a massage therapy license in order to practice massage therapy.  A recent graduate of the Diploma in Therapeutic Massage program who becomes a licensed massage therapist might find a position within a salon, hotel spa, physician’s office, fitness center or other private business.  Advancing as a massage therapist is related to additional education within massage therapy specialties as well as gaining experience.  With a disciplined attitude and the courage to go out on your own, a massage therapist can find flexibility by becoming an independent contractor or business owner of a massage therapy practice. About two-thirds of all massage therapists are self-employed either as business owners or independent contractors.

Additional related occupations that require advanced education include athletic trainers, physical therapist assistants or chiropractic technicians. For greater career opportunities, Herzing Diploma in Therapeutic Massage graduates can roll their credits into an Associate of Science in Therapeutic Massage degree and even a Bachelor’s in Healthcare Management or Bachelor's in Health and Wellness. The Chiropractic Technician program at Herzing can also be a great addition to the massage therapist’s resume.

Where do they work?

Massage therapists have the flexibility to work in a number of different places such as salons, spas, health and fitness centers, hospitals, physicians’ offices, hotels or private massage therapy offices.  Those massage therapists that are self-employed can even bring their work to the client’s home or office for added convenience to the client. They must also handle documentation of treatment and maintain sanitation standards.

Many massage therapists work a variety of different hours, as they can make themselves available during specific hours or the best time for their clients. This is referred to as scheduling “by appointment”. Many massage therapists who spend 15 to 30 hours per week giving massages consider themselves employed full-time; additional time is spent on documentation and sanitation.

What is the job outlook?

The projection for massage therapists is that it will grow by almost 25 percent between 2012 and 2022 (www.bls.gov), which is a much faster average than other occupations.  As healthcare is changing, the demand for massage therapy services will increase in order for this generation to maintain their health and live an active lifestyle.
