Careers

IT and Computer Networking Careers

As technology continues to advance, more skilled IT professionals will be needed to install, maintain, manage, repair and secure complex computer network systems. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of computer and Information Technology occupations is expected to increase by 12 percent from through 2024.

IT professionals work in a variety of environments including professional offices, small businesses, government organizations, and large corporations, and may hold many different titles. Entry-level professionals typically work behind the scenes. After gaining experience and expertise, they can advance to more senior-level work

While there is no universally accepted way to prepare for a job in IT, most employers place a premium on some formal college education. At Herzing, you can align your education to your career goals. A 2-year degree is a prerequisite for many entry-level jobs, while a bachelor’s degree is required for others. To get into management and advance, many employers require a master’s degree.

What are potential Information Technology job titles?

Prospective entry-level IT job position titles include network and computer administrators, help desk technicians, IT support specialist, computer and information systems managers, systems analyst and network architect.

How do I advance in my IT career?

Advancing your information technology career depends on the actual career path you choose –such as computer networking, management or security. Some IT degree graduates move up in their career field simply by gaining on-the-job experience, while others who see themselves as a manager, analyst or IT security professional will need to earn a bachelor’s degree and potentially a master’s degree. For most Information Technology professionals, adding industry credentials throughout your career is beneficial to remaining relevant.
