EMT/Paramedic associate degree program classes & curriculum details

The associate degree program combines core paramedic courses and general education studies to ensure you have the comprehensive education needed to both succeed as a paramedic and build a strong foundation for continued education and career advancement.

Classes are delivered at our campus in Birmingham, Alabama. The associate degree program includes a 270-hour field preceptorship to ensure you earn the practical experience necessary to excel right from the start in your new career.

Required Courses in General Education

Students enrolled in this associate degree must complete a minimum of 24.00 semester credit hours in general education distributed among the following disciplines. Refer to the General Education section of the catalog for Herzing University courses that would satisfy these requirements. * 9.00 Semester Credit Hours in Communications 6.00 Semester Credit Hours in Humanities (must include 3 semester credit hours of cultural diversity) 3.00 Semester Credit Hours in Mathematics 3.00 Semester Credit Hours in Science 3.00 Semester Credit Hours in Social and Behavioral Sciences * Transfer students may transfer courses that are within 1.00 semester credit hour of the courses listed above to meet these discipline requirements. Any resulting deficiency in the total of 24.00 semester credit hours required in general education may be made up with general education electives from any of the listed disciplines. **  A course with a critical thinking focus would be a course that addresses the theories and application of critical analysis with an emphasis on developing sequential reasoning skills. Examples may be courses in critical thinking, philosophy, logic, or science. *** Students in the state of Georgia must take a science course to fulfill this requirement.

Associate in Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic Degree Programs

This emergency medical technician-paramedic associate program will cover the roles and responsibilities of a paramedic within an EMS system, applying the basic concepts of development, pathophysiology and pharmacology to assess and manage patients with emergency medical needs. Students will learn how to maintain a patient's airway and oxygenate and ventilate a patient, be able to take a proper history, and perform a comprehensive physical exam. Students will be able to properly administer medications and communicate effectively with other healthcare providers including physicians, nurses, and other allied health personnel. They will also be able to integrate pathophysiology principles, assessment findings, and critical thinking skills to formulate a field impression and implement a treatment plan for trauma and medical patients of all ages. Graduates will be eligible to write the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians licensure exam and will be prepared for entrance into many challenging areas of hospital emergency departments, fire departments, and ambulance services.

To prepare competent entry-level Paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains with or without exit points at the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician and/or Emergency Medical Technician, and/or Emergency Medical Responder levels.

1. The Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic program at Herzing University - Birmingham is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).

CAAHEP Accredited Paramedic Programs track and report outcome measures annually to the Committee on Accreditation for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).

The most current CoAEMSP Annual Report was for the calendar year 2021.

The most recent success rate for the National Registry of EMT Paramedic/State Cognitive exam was 89.3%.

The most recent positive placement rate for graduates was 93.3%. Positive placement is defined by the CoAEMSP as ‘Employed full or part-time in a related field and/or continuing his/her education and/or serving in the military’. Positive placement is measured at completion of the program.

The most recent retention rate was 66.7%.

An application including a personal statement, letters of recommendation, and examples of community service is required. In addition, the scholarship review committee may review GPA and unmet financial need as part of eligibility criteria.

The program is designed to provide financial support for women that demonstrate leadership potential, initiative, and excellent communication skills and are pursuing a career or have an interest in public service, government, and/or the political process.

Requirements

To be considered for this scholarship, an applicant must be actively enrolled as a full-time or part-time undergraduate student in good academic standing and plan to enroll in the Fall. In addition, an applicant must be a female resident of Wisconsin and have a financial need as determined by Herzing University based on eligibility for the Pell Grant.

Who Can Apply

Rath Distinguished Scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement, merit, and leadership.

Requirements

Must be an actively enrolled student in good standing. If an entering first year student, the scholarship applicants must have graduated among the top 25 percent of their high school class. If a sophomore, junior, or senior, applicants must have demonstrated academic excellence by maintaining a grade point average of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent). In addition, scholarship recipients are to demonstrate strong campus and community leadership. Applicants must be enrolled through the Fall semester. Scholars must be U.S. citizens; Wisconsin residents preferred.
