While all computer scientists analyze clients’ needs in order to design, test, and develop software to meet those needs, there are two specialties available to software developers: computer applications and computer systems.
- Computer applications software engineers - develop applications software, typically in the C, C++ and Java languages. About 60% of computer software engineers specialize in applications software.
- Computer systems software engineers – experts in analyzing the software and infrastructure needs of an organization and then coordinating the construction, expansion, and implementation of the solutions. They may also work for a design house as a member of a team that is assigned to a special project for a client.
