Desira Franco

For Desira Franco, going back to school wasn’t just about earning a credential—it was about reclaiming a sense of purpose after years devoted to raising her children. “When they got a little older, I decided it was time to do something for myself,” she recalls.

Herzing University’s online medical assistant program offered exactly what she needed: the flexibility to pursue her education without stepping away from her role as a full-time mom. “I didn’t have any favorite professors or teachers since I completed everything online, but that flexibility was exactly what I needed,” she says.

Juggling coursework with family life wasn’t always easy. There were moments of stress and late nights, but Herzing’s support and the structure of the program helped her stay on track. “It wasn’t always easy, but the support I received from Herzing made it possible,” Desira reflects.

Crossing the finish line brought a deep sense of pride. “The best part was becoming a medical assistant,” she says. “It’s an accomplishment that puts a big smile on my face.”

Now working in the field, Desira finds purpose in helping others and contributing to a healthcare team. “I can now use my degree to help others, which is so rewarding,” she says. Her education not only opened the door to a new career but also brought new meaning to her everyday work.

Looking back, she’s most grateful for the opportunity to grow professionally without sacrificing what mattered most. “Herzing gave me the chance to do something meaningful for myself while still putting my family first,” she says.

Desira’s journey proves that with the right support and flexibility, it’s possible to pursue career goals while staying grounded in family. Herzing’s understanding of adult learners made it possible for her to succeed—not just as a student, but as a mother and a professional.
