Alumni Spotlight

Kshawnda Frazier’s decision to choose Herzing University wasn't made lightly. As a working nurse seeking to advance her education, she needed a program that could accommodate her demanding schedule while maintaining academic rigor.

"I chose Herzing University because I was looking for a program that combined flexibility, strong academic support and a focus on real-world nursing practice," Kshawnda explains. "I appreciated that Herzing is career-focused and offered online options that fit with my schedule as a working nurse."

The faculty's commitment to student success became a cornerstone of her experience. "The faculty's commitment to student success stood out to me, and I felt confident that I'd be supported both academically and professionally throughout my journey," she reflects.

Academic Excellence and Real-World Impact

Throughout her time at Herzing, Kshawnda consistently demonstrated academic excellence, earning Dean's List recognition for multiple semesters. Her dedication culminated in successfully completing her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree with a focus on quality improvement and leadership.

Her DNP project exemplified her commitment to evidence-based practice and patient care. Kshawnda led a notable quality improvement initiative aimed at improving GERD symptom management in the geriatric population, which included education, dietary interventions and outcome tracking. This project not only advanced her academic goals but also directly improved care outcomes at a primary care clinic in Georgia.

Building a Career in Healthcare Innovation

After graduation, Kshawnda landed her first position in postpartum care, but her entrepreneurial spirit and passion for accessible healthcare led her to launch her own telehealth practice. Her company is dedicated to increasing access to affordable primary care for underserved communities, reflecting her deep commitment to healthcare equity.

Her professional achievements extend beyond her practice. Kshawnda has participated in community health fairs and outreach events, offering screenings and education on chronic disease management, further demonstrating her service-driven mindset.

The Herzing Difference: Personal Connection in Online Learning

What sets Herzing apart, according to Kshawnda, is its genuine commitment to student success and personalized support. "Unlike larger institutions where you can feel like just a number, Herzing makes you feel seen, heard and valued," she notes.

Even in an online environment, Kshawnda formed lasting connections. "I had the privilege of learning from faculty who not only challenged me academically but also supported me personally," she recalls. "One professor in particular consistently reminded me of my potential, especially during moments of doubt — their encouragement kept me grounded and motivated."

These relationships extended to her classmates as well. "I also formed lasting friendships with classmates who shared the same passion and determination, and we leaned on each other through late nights, clinical discussions and project deadlines."

Lessons in Leadership and Resilience

Herzing helped shape Kshawnda into a more confident, resilient and purpose-driven individual. The experience of balancing academics, clinical practice and personal responsibilities taught her invaluable life skills.

"I learned that leadership isn't just about titles — it's about advocating for patients, making evidence-based decisions and showing compassion in every interaction," she explains. "One of the most valuable life lessons I gained was that growth often happens outside of your comfort zone — and that with the right mindset and support, you can rise to meet any challenge."

Giving Back and Looking Forward

Kshawnda remains committed to supporting future Herzing students and the university community. She has collaborated with faculty, shared feedback with current students and offered encouragement based on her experiences across the BSN, MSN and DNP programs.

"Looking ahead, I am eager to become more actively involved as an alumni mentor and ambassador, sharing my story to inspire others — especially those balancing school, work and family responsibilities," she says.

During her time at Herzing, she also took on mentorship roles for fellow nursing students and volunteered in local health outreach events, reinforcing the values of compassion, leadership and service that Herzing emphasizes.

Advice for Future Students

For current and future Herzing University students, Kshawnda offers this guidance: "Stay focused, stay consistent and don't be afraid to ask for help. The journey may be challenging, but every step is worth it. Take advantage of the resources Herzing offers — from faculty support to tutoring and peer connections."

She emphasizes the importance of mindset and community: "Surround yourself with people who believe in your goals, and remember why you started, especially during the tough moments. Most importantly, believe in yourself. You are capable of more than you think, and Herzing will give you the tools — but it's your determination that will carry you across the finish line."
