Alumni Spotlight

Some students face obstacles that would cause others to pause their educational journey. For Herzing University alumna Quiana Mitchell, multiple life challenges became the fuel that drove her to academic excellence and personal triumph.

Balancing Badge and Books

When Quiana first enrolled at Herzing University, she was already working as a police officer with the Department of Public Safety. Her days were demanding, but her commitment to education was unwavering. After completing her shifts, she would rush straight to campus, still in her police uniform, determined not to be late for class.

"The instructors were incredibly accommodating and took the time to ensure I was caught up on any discussions I had missed," Quiana recalls. "They genuinely cared and made sure I didn't fall behind, which was a lifesaver for me."

This flexibility and personal attention from faculty became even more crucial as Quiana faced an unexpected and life-altering challenge.

Fighting on Two Fronts

During her time at Herzing, Quiana was diagnosed with breast cancer. Suddenly, she found herself attending treatment five days a week while also attending classes five days a week. Many would have considered taking a break, but Quiana was determined not to let anything stop her educational progress.

"I was determined not to let anything stop me," she said.

Her instructors proved to be her educators and her support system. When the physical demands of attending in-person classes became overwhelming, they helped her transition to online courses, which significantly reduced the pressure she was experiencing.

Academic Excellence Despite Adversity

Rather than allowing her circumstances to diminish her academic performance, Quiana used her challenges as motivation. Throughout her time at Herzing, she consistently pushed herself to excel, earning a place on either the President's or Dean's List semester after semester.

A Delayed but Triumphant Celebration

Quiana completed her degree requirements before 2016 but had to wait until the following year to participate in the graduation ceremony. When she finally walked across the stage, the moment was everything she had hoped for and more.

"When I finally did, it was an incredible honor," she remembers. "The staff and even strangers cheered me on as I achieved my goal."

The celebration wasn't just about receiving a diploma. It was also about overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles and emerging victorious on the other side.

The Power of Supportive Faculty

Looking back on her Herzing experience, Quiana emphasizes how the faculty's dedication went far beyond typical academic support. Their willingness to adapt and provide individualized attention made her success possible.

"My professors went above and beyond to ensure I stayed on track, even with everything I was going through," she reflects. "Their support and encouragement made all the difference."

From Challenges to Triumph

Today, Quiana's story is one of complete victory. Not only did she complete her degree, but she also won her battle against cancer. The experience at Herzing didn't just provide her with education—it helped shape her character and resilience.

"I became even more driven to be the best version of myself, and I used the challenges I faced as stepping stones to success," she explains. "I'm proud to say that I'm now cancer-free, and I owe a lot of that to the supportive environment and exceptional faculty at Herzing."
