Eleanor McAbee's decision to return to school in her fifties wasn't about changing careers; it was about deepening her impact in the field she already loved. As a licensed practical nurse with a passion for hospice care, Eleanor knew that advancing her education would unlock new opportunities to provide the level of care she envisioned.
A Clear Vision for Advanced Care
Eleanor's motivation was crystal clear from the start. Working as an LPN in the hospice industry, she recognized the additional responsibilities and patient care opportunities that came with RN credentials.
"My driving ambition was to continue my role in the hospice industry, but I knew I needed the RN credentials to get to the level of care I wanted to provide," Eleanor explains.
Overcoming the Challenges of Adult Learning
Returning to school as a full-time employee in her fifties presented unique challenges, but Eleanor's determination never wavered. The demanding schedule required a careful balance between work, studies, and personal commitments.
"It was a demanding journey, but I was determined, and the program at Herzing made it possible," she reflected.

"I maintained a spot on the honor roll and graduated with honors, to the delight of my cheering adult children," Eleanor says proudly.
The graduation ceremony represented not just personal achievement but a moment of family celebration that highlighted the support system that made her success possible.
A Worthwhile Investment
Looking back on her educational journey, Eleanor views her time at Herzing as one of the most valuable investments she's ever made. The program's structure and support system created the foundation for her continued success.
"The 16-18 month program was the best investment I ever made," Eleanor emphasizes.
Her confidence in the program's preparation was validated when she passed the NCLEX examination on her first attempt, immediately opening doors to new career opportunities.
Achieving the Dream Role
Eleanor's advanced credentials allowed her to secure the exact position she had envisioned. As a case manager, she now oversees comprehensive care for 25 patients in various living situations, providing the level of involvement and responsibility she had sought.
"I was able to choose the perfect role for me - as a case manager overseeing the care of 25 patients in various living situations. I visit them weekly, managing their medications, orders, and transitions of care," Eleanor describes.

"My journey at Herzing was truly beautiful and has allowed me to flourish in my dream role in hospice nursing," Eleanor said.
