Behind every successful student is a strong support system that has helped them push through challenges or rise to levels they couldn’t have reached alone. No matter what you’re studying, where you’re enrolled, or how you’re attending class, everyone requires a helping hand from time to time.
Supportive environments help people feel more capable and that they aren’t going it alone. According to The National Library of Medicine, having a social support network can also have a positive impact on a student’s overall mental health. For those pursuing a degree, creating a strong support system can be the difference between surviving and thriving.
Here are some key steps for becoming the best version of yourself through the creation of a valuable, reliable support system.
The idea of creating a support system can sound intimidating but you don’t have to start from scratch. As a student, you already have a support system in your professors, counselors and peers.
You'd be surprised by how much can happen from just saying “hi” to someone new. Find the opportunities in class, at work, or on your commute to introduce yourself to an unfamiliar face. It could lead to a connection that you would otherwise never have made. Extending that approachable energy to others is a great way to start relationships off on a good note.
One of the best ways to meet new people is by joining a club, sport, or organization. There are endless opportunities to connect with others on just about anything — especially at school, where everyone is struggling with many of the same uncertainties, and everyone could use a friend and ally. Consider this a chance to explore something that you’ve always been interested in or revisit a hobby that you lost touch with.
Being a part of a supportive environment means exhibiting that support yourself. Give yourself the kindness you show others. Celebrate your victories and show yourself grace during times of struggle. By doing so, you’re more capable of providing comfort and support for others.
Something to remember when seeking a support system is that you are not alone in your search. Many others just like you are looking for individuals to connect and thrive with, it’s just a matter of finding them! Explore new relationships, strengthen existing friendships, and don’t forget to be supportive of yourself.
