Herzing Offers Peer Tutoring for the Modern Student

Herzing University recently partnered with Knack, an online platform that offers students 24/7, one-on-one tutoring and collaboration at no additional cost.

To state the obvious, college is a place for learning. The courses you’ll take are designed to build your knowledge, utilizing both real-world applications — like clinicals and internships — and classroom discussions to deepen your understanding. But there’s a very relevant third route to the learning process that doesn’t get as much attention: one-on-one peer tutoring.

Studies show that students learn more comprehensively and retain information longer when educators and institutions adopt a holistic approach. With the rise of online and hybrid learning and the consistent advancement of technology, having a peer-based tutoring program available can help facilitate a greater grasp of the material and allow students to build on their expertise. That’s why Herzing University recently partnered with Knack, an online platform that offers students 24/7, one-on-one tutoring and collaboration at no additional cost.

Why Tutoring Matters?

Some students might shy away from seeking outside help in academics. They could be worried that they will be judged or that there is a stigma attached to asking for help. Other students simply may not know tutoring is an available option. As Herzing wants to help students fully engage with their coursework, build their skills, and prepare for a career after graduation, offering Knack is a natural extension of the University’s core values. Some general benefits of one-on-one peer tutoring include:

  • Better understanding of material. Asking questions, collaborating with others and having discussions are part of the process behind understanding technical or complex topics in nursing, healthcare, business, or technology. In fact, students who use Knack are 10% more likely to pass courses.
  • Individualized attention and approach. There’s only so much material a professor can cover during class time. By learning from a student who aced the course, you can focus on the parts you need extra help on and ask the questions that weren’t covered in class.
  • Increased confidence. No one likes to feel unprepared, or like they are not quite getting it. Learning to navigate college life, with all the other responsibilities—finances, relationships, work, schedules, not to mention coursework—is tough enough. Having someone in your corner who helps you reach your goals and celebrates your successes is a boost to a student’s confidence, perhaps when it is needed most.
  • Using the buddy system. Having someone to walk through the studying helps ease anxiety and stress and can make you more motivated to do well. In fact, the average student satisfaction rating for Knack is 99%.
  • Making connections—academically and personally. Many students say that working with their peers is less intimidating and more conducive to learning because a peer will have experienced similar learning and social environments than a course professor might. Peer tutors can help with both the coursework as well as with advice for time management, study skills and navigating other school and life responsibilities.
