Frequently asked questions about a career in finance
A finance degree is an academic program focused on how money is managed, invested, and grown. At its core, it teaches you how to analyze financial information and make informed decisions that support long-term financial health for either individuals or organizations.
You’ll study key areas such as corporate finance, investment analysis, financial markets, and risk management. You can explore topics like personal financial planning, banking systems, and emerging areas such as fintech and digital finance. For example, coursework often emphasizes how organizations evaluate investments, manage cash flow, and respond to changing market conditions, while also building your ability to interpret data and assess risk.
A finance degree also helps you develop practical, transferable skills to complement core finance topics. These can include critical thinking and data-informed decision-making. Our degree program incorporates real-world applications, including case studies, simulations, and a capstone project (or internship) to help put academic finance coursework into real practice.
At the graduate level, a finance degree may go deeper into advanced financial theory, portfolio management, and global financial strategy, while also incorporating emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and digital finance tools.
Earning a finance degree can be a significant step toward preparing to pursue roles in areas like corporate finance, investment management, banking, or financial planning. It provides a strong foundation in how financial systems work and how strategic financial decisions are made in a complex, evolving global economy.
A finance degree can prepare you to pursue several types of careers focused on managing money, analyzing data, and supporting business decision-making.
With a bachelor’s degree in finance, you can potentially pursue entry-level roles such as financial analyst, banking associate, personal financial advisor, investment analyst, or treasury analyst, where you apply financial concepts, evaluate market trends, and support data-driven decisions.
With a master’s degree in finance, you develop advanced expertise in financial theory, risk management, and strategic decision-making. This can help you prepare to pursue more specialized or leadership-oriented roles such as portfolio manager, risk manager, senior financial analyst, investment manager, or financial consultant, including opportunities in emerging areas like fintech and digital finance.
Earning a degree at either level can help you build the knowledge and skills needed to start or advance your career in finance across a variety of industries.

Generally speaking, finance can offer a high ceiling in terms of pay compared to other career paths, but can be more demanding in terms of hours, competition, and work-life balance. One of the ongoing challenges in this field is finding the balance that’s right for you.
Finance graduates can find opportunities across a wide range of industries because financial skills are required for nearly every type of organization.
- Banks and financial institutions, such as commercial banks, credit unions, and lending organizations
- Investment firms and asset management companies, including hedge funds, mutual funds, and wealth management firms
- Corporations and large businesses, involving corporate finance, treasury, or financial planning roles within companies of all sizes
- Financial planning and advisory firms, where you can help individuals and organizations manage money, investments, and long-term financial goals
- Fintech companies, which use technology to deliver financial services, including digital banking and blockchain solutions
- Government agencies and nonprofits, where you can support budgeting, economic analysis, and financial oversight
A finance degree prepares you to pursue roles across these sectors by building skills in financial analysis, risk management, and data-driven decision-making.
Yes—a finance degree can be worth it for students who want to build specialized knowledge in financial analysis, investing, risk management, and strategic decision-making.
The value depends on your career goals, prior experience, and how you apply what you learn. For many students, earning a bachelor's or master's degree in finance can help strengthen qualifications for roles in banking, corporate finance, financial planning, investment analysis, and related fields.
A finance degree and an accounting degree both focus on managing money, but from different angles. Accounting measures what has already happened with money/assets via tracking and reporting, while finance more heavily focuses on what to do with money/assets next:
- Finance centers on planning and strategy. You learn how to analyze investments, manage risk, understand financial markets, and make data-informed decisions to help individuals or organizations grow their money. Coursework includes corporate finance, portfolio management, and fintech.
- Accounting focuses on recording and reporting financial information. You learn how to track transactions, prepare financial statements, ensure accuracy, and follow regulations. Common topics include auditing, taxation, and financial reporting.
We also offer a Bachelor of Science in Accounting program for students more interested in the field of accounting. You may choose to build an undergraduate foundation in accounting and consider finance as a closely related career pathway in the future.
A finance degree program helps you build a blend of technical, analytical, and decision-making skills you can apply across many business and financial settings:
- Financial analysis. Learn to evaluate financial data, assess performance, and make informed personal and business financial decisions
- Data-driven decision-making. Build skills in financial modeling, forecasting, and using data and analytics to guide strategy
- Investing and risk management. Understand how to manage portfolios, evaluate risk, and analyze financial markets and securities
- Corporate finance and strategy. Develop knowledge in budgeting, valuation, and strategic financial planning to support organizational goals
- Fintech and emerging technologies. Explore how AI, digital finance, and fintech tools are shaping modern financial decision-making
- Professional and communication skills. Strengthen your ability to communicate financial insights, think ethically, and collaborate in business environments
