My parents are paying for my school, where can they make payments?

Paying with an Authorized User

Beginning with the Fall 2025 semester

Great! If your parents (or anyone else) are helping cover your tuition, you can give them access to make payments directly through your HUPay account.

Here’s how to set them up as an authorized payer:

  1. Log into the HUPay payment center.
  2. Click on the My Account tab in the left-hand menu.
  3. Under the Payers section, click Send a Payer Invitation.
  4. Enter your parent’s (or payer’s) name and email address.

Once that’s done, they’ll get an email with instructions to create their own login. From their account, they’ll be able to:

  • View your current balance
  • Add their own payment method
  • Make payments directly to your account

Don’t worry—your saved payment info stays private, and you won’t be able to see theirs either.

My parents are undocumented, what do I do?

Your parents’ citizenship status doesn’t affect your eligibility for federal student aid. In fact, the FAFSA form doesn’t even ask about parent citizenship status. The information provided on the FAFSA does not go to any other agency, it is used ONLY for determining your eligibility for federal aid.

If your parent doesn’t have a Social Security number (SSN), you’ll need to enter all zeros without dashes (000000000) in the parent SSN section on your FAFSA form.

Also, a parent who doesn’t have an SSN can’t create an account username and password (FSA ID) or complete their part of the FAFSA form online. They can sign the FAFSA form only if you print a signature page. To do this, select “Print Signature Page” on the “My FAFSA” or “Signature Status” page, sign and have your parent sign, then mail it to the address listed on the page. Your FAFSA form will be processed once the signature page is received.

My parents don't live in the US, what do I do?

If your parents live out of the country, you will still need to include them on the FAFSA.
On the FAFSA you will select " Foreign Country" from the dropdown menu that asks about the parents' state of legal residence.
In the tax information section, you’ll have the opportunity to indicate that they have filed their taxes. Then, when the FAFSA form asks whether your parents filed a Puerto Rican or foreign tax return, select “Yes." You will need to convert the amounts on the foreign tax return into U.S. dollars as directed by the FAFSA help.

Why does parent have to apply?

Parents are not required to apply for the PLUS loan, it is purely optional. Even though it is optional, completing the application can still benefit the student. If a parent applies and gets approved, they do not need to take the loan. However, if the parent applies and is denied, the student can get more Unsubsidized loan funding themselves.

What is the Parent Plus Loan?

For parents that wish to assist in paying for their child's education, Parent PLUS loans are there to assist as an alternative to making cash payments.

Federal Parent PLUS loans are not awarded based on the student's financial need and are only awarded after the parent applies for them. Borrowers will need to complete a credit check to qualify for a PLUS loan.
