On Tuesday, April 13, Herzing University-Toledo administrators raffled off two Easter baskets for students to take home to their families. The Easter baskets were full of crayons, markers, coloring books and — of course — some sweet treats from the Easter Bunny! The goal of the raffle was to provide two students with an opportunity to give their child an Easter basket for the upcoming holiday.

Herzing-New Orleans participated in a career fair at Fletcher University, a local technical community college, on April 5, 2017, offering information about career advancement opportunities, flexible learning pathways and continuing education courses at Herzing. Fletcher students connected with representatives from Herzing and more than 20 community businesses and organizations to explore career opportunities in business, nursing and allied health.

Michelle Metzger, RN, MSN, MBA and Department Chair of Nursing at Herzing Kenosha, has been accepted into the International Nurses Association. Metzger has more than 15 years of experience as a specialist emergency room nurse, critical care nurse and ICU nurse. She currently teaches advanced medical and surgical nursing and leadership at the Kenosha campus. Her writing will be featured in an upcoming edition of the International Nurses Association’s Worldwide Leaders in Healthcare. Congrats, Michelle!

Herzing University is excited to announce a new partnership with LiquidCompass, which will provide a powerful online job search resource for healthcare and nursing students and alumni. This site collects and sorts open job opportunities directly from healthcare organizations, clinics and hospitals throughout the nation. All current and former healthcare and nursing students are encouraged to use this resource to their full advantage as they seek to begin or advance their career.

As part of a spring semester course requirement, Herzing-Madison nursing students visited local senior centers to observe various clinical sessions and learn more about the benefits of working at a senior center. All Herzing nursing students are required to fulfill a clinical component in order to gain experience in a variety of healthcare settings and cultivate a broad, holistic and reality-based understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a professional nurse. Herzing thanks the Monona Senior Center and other participating facilities for their hospitality!

Herzing-Minneapolis dental hygiene and dental assisting students volunteered their time and services at Special Smiles on March 25, 2017. Special Smiles is affiliated with Special Olympics, dedicated to creating awareness and improving access to dental care for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. In addition to learning about preventive dental care, the athletes were fitted for athletic mouth guards and received fluoride varnish applications.

On Wednesday, March 15, the President’s Council of Herzing’s Akron campus led a student fashion show to demonstrate the importance of appropriate workplace attire. Students and faculty modeled different outfits, illustrating the “Do’s” and “Don’ts” of dressing professionally. The event is part of Herzing’s “P.R.I.C.E. of Success” initiative, which emphasizes the values of professionalism, respect, integrity, caring and engagement. Students are expected to exhibit these behaviors and attributes in all interactions, both in and outside the classroom.

Herzing University was honored for its commitment to business and social responsibility with the Corporate Recognition Award during the Eagle Awards, the signature event of the African American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida, on January 14, 2017.

“In addition to providing our students an excellent educational experience, we strive to add value to Central Florida through the organizations and projects we support,” said Heatherann Antonacci, Campus President. “Our goal is to provide our community resources and support that changes lives.”

Herzing Madison is excited to welcome new full-time nursing professor Melissa Schaetzka to the faculty. Schaetzka started her career in nursing with an ASN before later completing her BSN and MSN. She has worked in acute care for 20 years, most recently as a director of acute care in the ICU. Schaetzka has taught the Wisconsin Nurse Residency Program for many years and has made the transition to nursing education, teaching both clinically and in the classroom. Welcome, Professor Schaetzka!
