Courses & curriculum details
Our curriculum is designed to align with the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM) standards and the Foundational Education Model (FEM), helping students develop the knowledge and skills needed for today’s health information profession.
FEM competencies are intentionally integrated throughout the curriculum to connect classroom learning with practical, real-world applications. This approach provides students with a strong foundation in health information management, data, technology, compliance, and professional practice while building critical thinking and problem-solving skills. By learning through a curriculum aligned with current industry expectations, students are better prepared to transition confidently into the workforce and pursue professional certification and career advancement opportunities.
The curriculum builds skills in medical coding, reimbursement, health data management, compliance, healthcare analytics, and application of artificial intelligence. Students also gain experience with CPT and HCPCS coding and apply their learning through a capstone focused on real-world health information practice.
All courses are delivered 100% online via the Canvas learning management system. Graduates of this program are eligible to take the AHIMA’s Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT®) certification exam.

Admissions requirements
Prerequisites to enroll in the Herzing University Health Information Technology associate degree program include:
- Prior education requirement. Completion of high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Entrance testing. Applicants must demonstrate the capacity to succeed in college-level courses via prior ACT/SAT scores, completion of prior college credit, or additional entrance testing.
- Availability of time, personal commitment, and a professional attitude. We exist to help enthusiastic students fully committed to reaching their highest career goals. Our faculty and leadership are dedicated to helping you reach them.
