I chose Herzing University because I wanted to take the next step in my nursing career after spending more than 20 years caring for patients as a CNA. I have always had a passion for helping others with compassion, dignity, and respect, and I knew becoming a nurse would allow me to make an even greater impact on the lives of my patients.
Herzing's Practical Nursing program offered the opportunity to turn that lifelong goal into reality. I was looking for a program that would help me build on my healthcare experience while preparing me for the NCLEX and a successful nursing career. As a single mother, I also appreciated having a path that allowed me to work toward my dream while continuing to care for my family.
Choosing Herzing was a big step toward achieving a goal I had worked toward for many years, and it brought me one step closer to becoming the nurse I have always wanted to be.
I was fortunate to have several professors who made a lasting impact on my journey at Herzing University. Professor Molly, Professor Ashley, Professor Shannon, Professor Winsel, Professor Shaunee, and Professor Crystal each played an important role in helping me grow into the nurse I am becoming.
Every professor brought something unique to the classroom. They challenged me to think critically, strengthened my clinical judgment, and encouraged me to believe in myself, even when nursing school felt overwhelming. They were always willing to answer questions, provide guidance, and share their real-world experiences, which helped bridge the gap between the classroom and patient care.
As a single mother balancing school, family responsibilities, and personal health challenges, there were times when the journey was difficult. Their encouragement, patience, and dedication reminded me why I started this journey in the first place. They didn't just teach nursing concepts—they inspired confidence, professionalism, compassion, and resilience.
During the program, I developed severe back problems that eventually required surgery. There were days when the pain made it difficult to sit through class, study, or complete clinicals, and I was placed on short-term disability. At times, I wondered how I was going to make it through.
I am truly grateful for Professor Molly, Professor Ashley, Professor Shannon, Professor Winsel, Professor Shaunee, and Professor Crystal. Their support and commitment to my success helped prepare me for graduation, the NCLEX, and the next chapter of my nursing career. I will always appreciate the positive impact they had on my life and my future as a nurse.
I also leaned on the support of my children. My daughters were always encouraging me to keep going, but my son was my biggest source of strength. He became an LPN four years ago, and having someone who understood exactly what I was going through made all the difference. He constantly reminded me that I could succeed, shared his knowledge and encouragement, and motivated me to keep pushing forward even when things were difficult. Their love, support, and belief in me gave me the strength to persevere. Through determination, faith, and the encouragement of my children, I continued to study, complete my clinicals, and stay focused on my goal of becoming a nurse.
Looking back, I realize that every obstacle made me stronger. Overcoming these challenges has not only prepared me for the NCLEX but has also made me a more compassionate, resilient, and empathetic future nurse. I hope my journey shows my children that no matter your age or the obstacles you face, it's never too late to pursue your dreams and never give up.
My clinical experiences were the most valuable part of my education because they allowed me to apply what I learned in the classroom to real patient care. Working with patients helped strengthen my critical thinking, communication, assessment skills, and confidence. I also enjoyed my medical-surgical and specialty nursing courses because they challenged me to think like a nurse and prepared me for the situations I will encounter in my career.
One thing that surprised me was how much I grew—not just academically, but personally. Nursing school pushed me outside of my comfort zone and taught me resilience, confidence, and the importance of believing in myself. I also realized that learning never stops in nursing, and every experience is an opportunity to become a better caregiver.
Earning my nursing degree at Herzing University has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The journey challenged me in ways I never imagined, but it also helped me grow into a stronger, more confident future nurse.
After graduation, my immediate goal is to pass the NCLEX and begin my career as a Licensed Practical Nurse. I currently work at a hospital in Illinois, and I hope to continue growing within the organization by transitioning into an LPN role. Being able to build on my years of healthcare experience while taking on new responsibilities as a nurse is an exciting next step in my career.
My long-term goal is to continue my education and earn my RN degree. I believe learning is a lifelong journey, and I want to continue expanding my knowledge and skills so I can provide the highest quality care to my patients. I'm excited about the opportunities ahead and look forward to making a positive difference in the lives of the people and communities I serve.
I am proud to be a Herzing University graduate and look forward to representing the university with compassion, professionalism, and excellence throughout my nursing career. Thank you to everyone who played a part in helping me reach this milestone.
