Who this program is for

  • Adults entering healthcare for the first time who want a structured path into the operating room
  • Students in Florida and Georgia who want hands-on lab training close to home
  • Learners who want the flexibility of online coursework alongside labs and clinicals
  • Future allied health professionals preparing for the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) exam

What you'll learn and what you can do

The curriculum moves from foundational coursework to hands-on practice, covering sterile technique, surgical instrumentation, pharmacology, surgical procedures and the roles of the surgical team. Students build skills in on-campus skills labs and then progress through three clinical courses. A 2-credit course near the end of the program prepares students for the CST exam, and a dedicated Certification Coordinator supports them through the process.

Graduates are prepared to sit for the CST exam administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) and to pursue entry-level roles in hospital operating rooms, outpatient care centers and ambulatory surgical facilities. A surgical technology program does not provide surgical assistant training.

Common job titles for graduates:

  • Surgical Technologist
  • Scrub Tech
  • Operating Room Technician

Frequently asked questions

How long does Herzing's Surgical Technology program take?

Direct Entry students complete the program in about 24 months. Students with approved transfer credit may need less time.

Is the program online, hybrid or in person?

The program is hybrid. Didactic courses are online, labs take place at the Tampa, Orlando or Atlanta campus, and clinicals are completed on site in the student's state. It cannot be completed 100% online.

What are the admission requirements?

Applicants need a high school diploma, GED or equivalent and a minimum score of 65 on the HESI A2 entrance exam. Because the program includes direct patient contact, students must also complete drug testing and immunization and health checks, and interview with an admissions advisor. [The Direct Entry page says no minimum GPA, while the main Surgical Technology page lists a 2.50 minimum. Confirm before publishing.]

Is the program accredited?

Yes. The Associate of Science in Surgical Technology program at Herzing University Madison is accredited by CAAHEP on the recommendation of ARC/STSA, and Herzing is approved to offer the program online through association with the Madison campus. Herzing University is institutionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

What can I do with this degree?

Graduates are prepared for entry-level surgical technologist roles in hospitals, outpatient care centers and ambulatory surgical facilities, and to sit for the CST exam.

The bottom line

Herzing's hybrid Surgical Technology program is now the right fit for students in Florida and Georgia who want structured, hands-on training for a career in the operating room with the flexibility of online coursework.
