For over six decades, Herzing University has been at the forefront of career-focused education. Founded in 1965 by Henry and Suzanne Herzing, and now led by their daughter, President Renée Herzing, we've grown from a single computer training institute to a respected, multi-campus institution with 12 campuses across eight states offering a wide range of academic programs, as well as our online campus and programming.

While all 12 campuses share the same mission to educate, support and empower all students for success in work, learning and engagement in our communities and global society, each campus has its own unique history and contributions that it brings to the wider university system.

Herzing Akron Campus

History and Building

For over 45 years, Herzing University Akron has provided Youngstown and Tri-County residents with access to the degrees and support they need to transform their lives. While the current Akron campus building, located at 1600 South Arlington St, Suite 100, opened in 2004, Herzing Akron was established in 1970 under the title Akron Institute of Herzing University.

Unlike many universities with large outdoor spaces, Herzing Akron is entirely contained within a single professional building. This practical and commuter-friendly learning environment is focused on getting students in and out for classes and lab work. The campus itself is professional and practical in focus, rather than traditional college-campus style.

Because the campus is close to main roads and in a suburban commercial area of Akron, close to I-77/224, there are no dormitories or residence halls on site. Students essentially walk into this one building for all in-person needs.

But don’t let the simple structure deceive you! Herzing Akron features state-of-the-industry facilities, classrooms, clinical and simulation, student support areas and administrative offices that support teaching and career services.

The room features massage chairs, flexible seating, light therapy, yoga mats, coloring books, and more to help students manage their stress and build healthy coping strategies. This dedicated space is available to all students to recharge, reflect, and refocus throughout their day.

Academic Programs

Herzing University is a non-traditional school in the sense that most of our student body is NOT the typical 18-22 year olds you see on most college campuses. Most Herzing students are adults who juggle school with work or family.

For this reason, Herzing Akron offers career-oriented degrees and certificates across several fields. Some courses — particularly general education — may be offered online or in hybrid formats, while core skills labs and clinicals are offered on campus. Some of our campus offerings include:

Behavioral Health

  • Programs in psychology, social work and health and human services.

Business & Technology

  • Degrees in business management, accounting, IT, cybersecurity and more.

We work hard to fully prepare you for success in your work and provide as much flexibility as possible to achieve the right school-life balance. Our admissions team can help you determine how much coursework you can potentially complete in nights and evenings.

Availability of evening or night classes varies by program and class type. General education courses can typically be completed online on your schedule. In some cases, certain classwork or exams may require a set login time.

BLS pay estimates calculate the median annual wage for various occupations. Per the BLS the median wage for an occupation is: "The wage at which half of the workers in the occupation earned more than that amount, and half earned less. Median wage data are from the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey." Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook 2024. BLS median wage estimates do not represent entry-level wages and/or salaries. Multiple factors, including prior experience, age, geographic market in which you want to work, and degree level and field, will affect career outcomes, including starting salary and earnings as an experienced employee. Herzing neither represents that its graduates will earn the median salaries calculated by BLS for a particular job nor guarantees that graduation from its program will result in a job, promotion, particular wage or salary, or other career growth.
