Hybrid MBA vs. Online MBA: Choosing the Format That Fits Your Life
Aug 6, 2026

Whether you're preparing for leadership, changing careers, or advancing in your current organization, earning a Master of Business Administration (MBA) can help you build the strategic, leadership, and analytical skills employers value. If, like most MBA students, you’re a working professional, you may find it difficult to commute to a campus several nights a week. An MBA that’s completely on campus may not be feasible for you. However, you may also thrive on face-to-face connection—something a fully online MBA doesn’t provide.
Enter the hybrid MBA. A hybrid MBA is a graduate business administration program that combines online coursework with on-campus classes. It’s designed to help students pursue executive-level knowledge and skills in a format that blends flexibility with personal interaction. At Herzing University, we offer online MBA programs and a hybrid MBA at our campus in Atlanta, Georgia.
In this post, we’ll compare the benefits of both program options, explore the curriculum and industry certification options and explain which format fits which types of students.
What Is a Hybrid MBA?
Again, a hybrid MBA combines online and in-person coursework. Some online MBA programs include optional residencies while some on-campus programs have online features, such as discussion boards or guest speakers presenting via video conference. These are both different from a hybrid MBA. Hybrid programs tend to have a structured, required on-campus component that’s split about 50/50 with online classes.
At Herzing, the faculty, curriculum and learning experiences don’t change based on the format you choose. Neither does the timeframe: both hybrid and online students can earn their MBA with us in as few as 12 months. All that changes is where the learning happens. Students graduate with the same respected MBA credential while choosing the learning environment that best fits their schedule and learning preferences.

The MBA in Business Analytics Option
Herzing also offers an MBA in Business Analytics program. Like the MBA, it’s available both online and in a hybrid format in Atlanta. Unlike the MBA, it’s a 36-credit program that emphasizes data-driven leadership and analytics skills that help businesses make sense of uncertainty and find new opportunities. Different courses in this program include:
- Foundations of Business Analytics for Leaders
- Predictive Analytics and Machine Learning
- Big Data, Cloud and Visualization
- Marketing Engineering
Of particular interest to international students is the fact that the MBA-BA meets Department of Homeland Security criteria for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) designation. If you’re an international student who’s eligible for an F-1, you may be able to apply to extend your optional practical training (OPT) period by up to 24 months when you enroll in a STEM-designated program. The program is particularly well suited for professionals interested in leadership roles that combine business strategy with advanced analytics and AI-driven decision-making.
Built-In Industry Certification Options
Coursework in both of Herzing’s MBA programs (in any format) aligns with third-party industry credentials. After completing your studies, you may be eligible to take certification exams in a range of topics.
General MBA graduates may qualify for the following certification exams:
- Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®)
- Project Management Professional (PMP®)
- Society for Human Resource Management – Certified Professional (SHRM-CP®)
- Society for Human Resource Management – Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP®)
MBA in Business Analytics graduates may be eligible for:
- Business Data Analytics Certification (IIBA-CBDA®)
- Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP®)
- PMI™ Professional in Business Analysis (PMI-PBA®)
Eligibility for these exams may require additional work experience or study beyond your MBA—always check with certifying organizations before you apply to take any exams. If you do sit an exam and pass after completing your MBA, Herzing will reimburse your application fees for up to three certifications.
Which MBA Format Is Right for You?
Both formats lead to the same degree, taught by the same faculty, so your decision comes down to how you learn best and what your weekly routine is like. A few questions can help you narrow it down.
How close are you to Atlanta? The hybrid format includes required on-campus coursework at our campus in Sandy Springs. If getting there on a regular schedule is realistic for you, hybrid is worth a look. If it would be a stretch, the online format delivers the same MBA from wherever you are eligible to enroll.
Do you do your best work with people in the room? Some students stay motivated by scheduled class time, hallway conversations and faculty they can talk to face to face. Others get more done at 6 a.m. or after the kids are asleep. Be honest with yourself about which one describes you, because that habit will shape your entire 12 months.
How technical do you want to get? The 33-credit MBA builds broad leadership and management capability with an introduction to analytics. The 36-credit MBA in Business Analytics goes considerably deeper into predictive analytics, machine learning and big data and it carries a STEM designation.
Are you an international student? STEM designation may extend your OPT eligibility, which can make the MBA in Business Analytics the stronger choice for your long-term plans in the United States.
Admission to either program requires a completed bachelor’s or graduate degree from an accredited college or university, an interview with a Herzing admissions advisor and a completed application. No GMAT or GRE score is required for either one.
What You Get in Either Format
Regardless of which format you choose, every MBA student receives the same high-quality curriculum, experienced faculty, student support services, and respected credential. Every MBA student has access to academic advising, tutoring, technical support and library services, all of it available virtually so you can use it between meetings or late at night. Classes run during the day and in the evening to accommodate a working schedule.
Career support continues after you graduate through lifelong career coaching and students entering the MBA in Business Analytics can transfer up to 12 approved semester credit hours from prior graduate coursework, which shortens both the timeline and the total cost.
Whichever format you choose, you will be studying at a university institutionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the best online MBA programs in 2026.
