Why Billing and Coding Is the Right Career for Me

My name is Shirlene Anderson, and I am an Insurance Billing and Coding student at Herzing University. I’ve found insurance billing and coding to be a rewarding field of study, and I’d like to let you know more about it.

Medical billing professionals are an important part of the healthcare support team. They:

  • Send information to patients, insurance companies, doctors and medical facilities
  • Process insurance claims for billing
  • Follow up on claims to ensure that reimbursement occurs

If you’re very detail-oriented, a medical billing and coding degree could be a good fit for you.

I wanted to earn my degree in insurance billing and coding for a variety of reasons. The main one is that billing specialists have a lot of flexibility in choosing their work environment and schedules. I could work from home as a medical biller or coder, and I could also work onsite at any healthcare organization or business that deals with insurance billing.

I have heard about many mothers who have chosen to work from home to do this job. They feel empowered because they can still be available for their families on a day-to-day basis.

I also wanted to be to home with my family while I was earning my degree, and Herzing’s online course options allow me to do that. As an insurance billing and coding student, I’ve studied everything from anatomy to pharmacology. I’ve learned how to process insurance claims, use coding software like 3M, and how to code from coding manuals. Taking these courses has helped me understand how different aspects of the healthcare industry work together.

Now, graduation is just around the corner for me. It is an exciting time, because I will have the skills to start a new career in healthcare and be one of many individuals who helps others live a happy and healthy life.

But this is not the end of my journey; I plan to return to Herzing University to complete my bachelor's degree in Health Information Management. I know that my Herzing family will help me to continue my education and reach new goals.

BLS pay estimates calculate the median annual wage for various occupations. Per the BLS the median wage for an occupation is: "The wage at which half of the workers in the occupation earned more than that amount, and half earned less. Median wage data are from the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey." Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook 2024. BLS median wage estimates do not represent entry-level wages and/or salaries. Multiple factors, including prior experience, age, geographic market in which you want to work, and degree level and field, will affect career outcomes, including starting salary and earnings as an experienced employee. Herzing neither represents that its graduates will earn the median salaries calculated by BLS for a particular job nor guarantees that graduation from its program will result in a job, promotion, particular wage or salary, or other career growth.
