When you think of the people who work in hospitals, you usually think of nurses and doctors. While those positions play a huge role in overall patient care, there are plenty of positions instrumental to a hospital’s success. Plus, not every position requires years of advanced schooling — making your dreams of working in healthcare is attainable.
Medical assistant, surgical technician, and physical therapist assistant are just a few of the additional roles that work in hospitals, and Herzing University has a variety of flexible and manageable programs to help you get qualified for these positions, many in 2 years or less. Here are some possible careers if you are interested in working in a hospital.
Healthcare Administration
Healthcare administrators keep both the patients and medical staff organized. Often tasked with scheduling appointments, processing insurance claims and communicating with pharmacists, healthcare administrators keep the hospital moving thanks to their managerial and organizational skills. Earning a medical office administration degree can take as little as eight months, making it a great choice for those who want to contribute to the day-to-day upkeep of the hospital as quickly as possible.
Medical Billing and Coding
Often an unsung hero of the hospital, medical billers are responsible for filing medical claims with insurance companies and third-party payers like Medicare and Medicaid. This is a vital position for all health care providers' financial cycles, from single-provider practices to huge medical institutions.
Medical coders make this process possible. Medical coders interpret the care provided for patients into codes a computer system can understand. These codes then are properly used for billing processes. Earning an online medical billing and coding diploma is the first step toward a successful career as a medical biller and/or coder.
Occupational Therapy Assistants
Patients who have difficulties performing daily living and job activities due to illnesses, injuries, or disabilities are treated by an occupational therapy assistant (OTA), who works alongside an occupational therapist (OT or OTR). These compassionate individuals help plan and execute the most effective exercises and routines for those who need them. as prescribed in a treatment plan and instructs them on using equipment that makes their day-to-day life easier.
Practical Nursing
Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) are the individuals responsible for performing basic patient care under the supervision of Registered Nurses (RNs). These individuals are empathetic, motivated, and organized. Becoming an LPN opens the doors to numerous medical career opportunities — including becoming an RN or earning more responsibility in the hospital. If you’re passionate about working in a hospital as a nurse, earning your LPN is a great way to start your journey.
Radiologic Technology
As a key player in the x-ray process, radiologic technologists collect images to assist physicians in diagnosing patient diseases and determining the best course of treatment.
