1. Online Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN)

One of the fastest tracks we offer for students without prior experience in nursing is our online Associate of Science in Nursing program

Naming conventions may vary at the associate degree level, including ASN, ADN (Associate Degree in Nursing), and AASN (Associate of Applied Science in Nursing). There isn’t usually a significant difference between these types of programs.

Our online ASN program, which is eligible for residents of select U.S. states, can be completed in as few as 24 months with 100% online didactic coursework. The bridge option provides select healthcare professionals a faster pathway to earning an ASN online: practical nurses, paramedics, military medics, respiratory therapists, and cardiovascular technologists

This can be an excellent option for students with no prior degree looking for the shortest path to working as a registered nurse. Our admissions team can help you determine if this is the right pathway for you.

2. Online Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

A bachelor’s degree curriculum takes longer to complete—as few as 36 months—but offers potential benefits for students with no prior nursing experience when compared to an ASN program.

The online BSN program offers additional undergraduate courses which can help better prepare you to pass the NCLEX-RN(R) exam. The additional coursework and time can help you establish a stronger foundation to prepare for real world success as an RN.

Another benefit of the BSN program is you can potentially earn dual credit towards a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program. The BSN program also includes a BSN bridge option for the healthcare professions listed previously.

The online BSN program can be a good choice for students new to nursing who are looking for a more comprehensive undergraduate education. Earning a bachelor’s degree now can position you more strongly to advance your nursing education to the graduate level in the future.

Accelerated study

The Herzing online BSN program can be completed faster than a typical 4-year bachelor’s degree program, but it’s not strictly an “accelerated” program.

Prospective students who are prepared for a more rigorous curriculum, hold a non-nursing bachelor’s degree (any major), and reside near an eligible Herzing campus may be interested in our on-campus Accelerated BSN option (ABSN). You can potentially complete some coursework online, but some students may benefit from on-campus courses to more firmly embed knowledge and skills in such a fast-moving curriculum.

3. Online Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) – Direct Entry

Our nursing school offers an alternative second-degree master’s program for students interested in an online program and want to position themselves for higher pay potential and/or further career advancement.

The MSN Direct Entry program is designed for students who have already earned a non-nursing bachelor’s degree. The program can be completed in as few as 24 months, meaning students with no nursing experience can potentially become a master’s-prepared RN in about 2 years.

Completing a master’s degree program now can help you develop more advanced knowledge and skills, as well as help you find a quicker path to higher education in the future. After earning a master’s degree, you can potentially pursue a post master’s certificate in a specialty of your choosing (including several types of nurse practitioners) or continue into a doctorate in nursing program and earn the terminal degree in nursing.

The recipe for the success in this online program includes perseverance, determination, and an eagerness to dive into the deep end of a highly rewarding career path. Our faculty and staff are dedicated to helping you successfully complete the program, pass the NCLEX-RN(R), and reach for greater heights in the field of nursing.

Hands-on training

Each of the online nursing programs listed above feature 100% online didactic classes—but they also employ a hybrid approach including important in-person components to put your academic learning to practice.

In-person learning includes clinicals in your geographic area, as well as multiple 2-4 day intensives which take place at our campus in Nashville, Tennessee. Clinical hours and number of intensives vary by program.

Applying your online learning to real, practical nursing experiences with fellow students and Herzing faculty is crucial to help you succeed in your first entry-level RN job.

Enrollment requirements

Prerequisites to enroll vary by program. The minimum required GPA is lower for our undergraduate degree options than the MSN Direct Entry program.

The associate and bachelor’s degree options do not require a prior degree—but you will need a non-nursing bachelor’s degree to apply for the MSN Direct Entry program.

You will also need to achieve a minimum composite score on the most current version of the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS).

Each program is available in select U.S. states which varies by degree level; you can click below to find eligible states for the program of your choosing:

Online pre-nursing

If you do not meet the GPA requirement for an online undergraduate program, there is another online option potentially available to you: our online general studies pre-nursing program. Through this program, you can potentially improve your GPA enough to qualify for an online BSN program and continue the pathway to becoming an RN.

As an alternative, you may consider starting your nursing career as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN/LVN). Our 12-month on-campus practical nursing diploma program is available at several campus locations.

How we recommend working professionals think about returning to nursing school

While we design our online prelicensure programs to be as flexible for students as possible, it can be very challenging to continue working full-time while working towards earning a nursing degree.

You can work as much as you feel is necessary, but we recommend students work minimal hours over the course of our prelicensure programs.

We understand reducing your work hours while investing in a degree program can be hard to imagine. However, there are steps you can take to help make ends meet through nursing school.

Yes — you can start your nursing path at Herzing with no prior nursing experience. Herzing offers three online nursing pathways for students new to nursing: the Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN), the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) – Direct Entry. The associate and bachelor’s options don’t require a prior degree, while the MSN Direct Entry program is for those who already hold a non-nursing bachelor’s degree. Each pathway is designed to prepare you for a career as a registered nurse (RN), and each is available to residents of select U.S. states. Our admissions team can help you figure out which one fits where you are right now.

Herzing’s three online pathways for non-nurses differ in length, credential and entry requirements:

  • Online ASN: Earn your Associate of Science in Nursing in as few as 24 months. It’s one of the fastest tracks Herzing offers for students with no prior nursing experience and can be a good fit if you’re looking for the shortest path to working as an RN.
  • Online BSN: Earn your Bachelor of Science in Nursing in as few as 36 months. The added undergraduate coursework can help better prepare you for the NCLEX-RN exam and can earn dual credit toward a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN).
  • Online MSN Direct Entry: Earn your Master of Science in Nursing in as few as 20-24 months. This second-degree pathway is built for students who already hold a non-nursing bachelor’s degree.

Not sure which one is right for you? Our admissions team can help you weigh your options.

Herzing’s online nursing coursework is 100% online for the didactic (classroom) portion, but each program takes a hybrid approach that includes important in-person components. Your in-person learning includes hands-on clinicals in your geographic area, plus multiple 2-4 day intensives held at Herzing’s campus in Nashville, Tennessee. The number of clinical hours and intensives varies by program. This mix lets you handle your coursework online while putting what you learn into practice with fellow students and Herzing faculty.

Prerequisites vary by program, but a few requirements apply across Herzing’s online nursing pathways for non-nurses. You’ll need to reach a minimum composite score on the most current version of the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). The associate and bachelor’s options don’t require a prior degree, while the MSN Direct Entry program requires completion of a non-nursing bachelor’s degree. The minimum required GPA is lower for the undergraduate options than for the MSN Direct Entry program. Each program is available in select U.S. states, and eligibility varies by degree level, so it’s worth checking which programs are open where you live.

The MSN Direct Entry program is a second-degree master’s pathway for students who already hold a non-nursing bachelor’s degree and want to transition to nursing. You can complete it in as few as 20-24 months, which means that even with no nursing experience, you can potentially become a master’s-prepared RN in about two years. After you finish, you can potentially pursue a Post Master’s Certificate in a specialty such as a nurse practitioner area, or continue into a doctorate in nursing to earn the terminal degree in the field. It’s a rigorous program with set benchmarks, and Herzing faculty and staff are dedicated to helping you complete it and prepare for the NCLEX-RN.

Yes. If you’re a licensed healthcare professional, Herzing offers a bridge option that can give you a faster pathway into the online ASN and online BSN programs. The bridge option is available to practical nurses (LPNs), paramedics, military medics, respiratory therapists and cardiovascular technologists. It builds on the training you already have, so you may have a faster route to earning your nursing degree than someone starting without healthcare experience.

If you don’t meet the GPA requirement for an online undergraduate nursing program, you still have options. Herzing offers an online general studies pre-nursing program where you can potentially raise your GPA enough to qualify for the online BSN program and keep moving toward becoming an RN. You might also consider starting as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN/LVN) through Herzing’s 12-month on-campus Practical Nursing diploma program, which is offered at several campus locations.
